Understanding the Compound Bow
A compound bow is designed to use a levering system that shall make the upper and lower portions of the bow, called its limbs, to bend and thus give the power needed to shoot forth the arrow.
The difference between these compound bows and the traditional wooden longbows, among other things, is the lack of flexibility in their limbs. Wood was found not to be as efficient in the transmission of power and flex as more modern materials.
The bow may be stiff, but it has levers and pulleys that afford it its flex for the power generation. This enables its functioning. As a hunter draws back the string, some mechanical advantage causes the development of power, so much so that it gets to its highest point, which then is released and it pushes out the arrow.
Compound bow function despite the prevalent weather. In the olden days, wooden bows were not usable when it was damp, since they got to absorb the moisture. This lessens its transmission capabilities. Wood would also crack if it got too hot and dry.
Compound bows were not readily accepted back then. People needed time to warm up to its qualities. As time went by and its performance was evident, more and more of them took them up. They see it as much better, in terms of speed and accuracy.
There are ongoing debates over which materials and manufacturers make the best compound bows. The most popular materials for making these bows include aluminum, magnesium, or an aluminum alloy that is commonly used in the aircraft making industry.
A bow will get the majority of its strength from its limbs. The pulleys and levers play a small role in the making of this power. The cams and wheels need to be manufactured just right, if they are to properly move when they bring back the string. The term string is still around ,even though that part is now made of some advanced materials. We now have some made from highly efficient high-modulus polyethylene cables. Those have the ability to hold a lot of tensile strength. They will not stretch too, which would have made them less efficient. They used to be made from a high tensile coated steel cable, prior to this development.
The cams present are for controlling the speed of the arrow. Cams are usually categorized as soft and hard types. Softer cams are usually for those still learning archery.
